UK teens get their content from these social media platforms

Social media sites have become the main sources of information for young people in the UK, according to a report by the World Economic Forum.

According to the News Consumption in the UK: 2022 report, the three most popular social media platforms among 12 to 15 year olds are Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.

About a third of young people in the UK choose to get their news from Instagram, making it the most popular source of news for the 12-15 age group in the UK.

TikTok and YouTube rank next with 28% each and young people follow them for news. Even though social media sites have been widely followed for news, they remain the least trusted sources of information.

Among 12-15 year olds, only 30% think the stories available on social media platforms are not accurate. However, when it comes to getting information from their own friends, the trust score is 37%.

Ofcom research reveals that different age groups consume their news from different sources. While older generations are likely to prefer print media, radio and television, younger people are much more likely to use the internet and social media for information.

Even among adults, consumption of print and online newspapers has declined from 47% in 2020 to 38% in 2022.

Studies have shown that the COVID-19 lockdown has a major impact on media consumption habits.

In the UK, over 80% of consumers said they had consumed more media content since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Broadcast TV, online videos on YouTube and TikTok were the most searched sources of content for different generations and genders.
