Spending long hours on social media platforms will lead to depression

According to a new study, young adults, who use social media more, are much more likely to develop depression within six months, regardless of their personality type.

The results, published in the Journal of Affective Disorders Reports, showed that very pleasant people were 49% less likely to become depressed than those who were not very pleasant.

“Previous research has linked the development of depression to many factors,” said the authors, including Chunhua Cao, assistant professor at the University of Alabama College of Education.

“However, the literature lacks studies that focus on how various personality characteristics may interact with social media use and depression. This new study addressed these important research questions, finding strong associations and linear depression across all personality traits,” they added. .

The team also found that people with high neuroticism were twice as likely to develop depression as those with low neuroticism when they used more than 300 minutes of social media a day.

For the study, the team involved a sample of more than 1,000 American adults between the ages of 18 and 30.

Depression was measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire. Social media was measured by asking participants how much daily time they spent on popular social media platforms.

Meanwhile, personality was measured using the Big Five Inventory, which assessed openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness and neuroticism.

The authors suggest that problematic social comparison may reinforce negative feelings about oneself and others, which could explain how the risk of depression increases with increased use of social media.

Engaging primarily in negative content can also reinforce these feelings. And finally, engaging in more social media reduces opportunities for in-person interactions and activities outside the home.
