Social media platforms score alarmingly high in protecting LGBTQ community
GLAAD rated companies using 12 LGBTQ-specific online safety indicators for privacy, free speech, and explicit protections.
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and TikTok, all performed poorly on the group dashboard – less more than 50% out of 100%.

Here are the detailed scores from highest to lowest:
- Instagram: 48.38%
- Facebook: 46.3%
- YouTube: 45.11%
- Twitter: 44.7%
- Tiktok: 42.51%
Among the most alarming concerns identified by the report are nickname and contempt for gender, with Twitter and TikTok being the only platforms offering adequate protection.
YouTube and Twitter users cannot add their preferred pronoun, while Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok do not offer this option to all users or allow users to control who sees their pronoun.
Not all platforms provide their users with adequate control over how their gender and identity data is collected and shared, both in terms of recommendations and targeted advertising.
To make matters worse, they also scored extremely low on demonetizing or removing legitimate LGBTQ content. The highest score for YouTube was just 21.43%, followed by 7.14% for Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, and 0% for Twitter.
Additionally, Twitter and YouTube do not offer any LGBTQ training to their content moderators. While the other companies offer training, the survey found they need to step up these efforts, with Instagram and Facebook getting 25% in this area and TikTok only hitting 50%.
On the bright side (shiny as it may be), almost all platforms score above 80% on workforce diversity (except TikTok at 0%) and do a good job of it. prohibiting harmful advertising.
GLAAD recommends stronger political commitments, increased user options for data control and, above all, transparency.
