New animation project tackles misinformation and vaccines for Media Literacy Week
‘Booster Troop’ created by Emmy-winning black and Latino doctors, educators and television writers
SAN DIEGO, Calif., Oct. 18, 2022 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Founded by two black doctors who were tired of seeing patients who looked like them die sicker and younger, Welfie is launching “Booster Troop,” a fun initiative health media education program that helps underserved children better spot misinformation. It will launch on October 24 for Media Literacy Week and includes a 7-minute animated episode in English and Spanish, a lesson plan and other teaching materials. Welfie provides schools with culturally competent health and mental health education and care coordination.
“Booster Troop” was made by Emmy Award-winning writers, educators, doctors, child psychologists, and trusted by kids, parents, teachers, school administrators, misinformation experts, psychologists and former executives of PBS and Sesame Workshop. “Booster Troop” is free and features Welfie pediatricians Dr. Nneka Edwards, MPH, who is also Welfie’s co-founder, and Dr. Jaime Deville, who worked on the COVID vaccine.
“Children are the most powerful agents of change in the universe,” said Dr. Steven Moyo, MD and CEO and Founder of Welfie. “If we can help children find joy and purpose in their own health, they will inspire the adults around them to do the same. But that can only happen if we help them understand how to distinguish accurate information from inaccurate information. »
The first episode of “Booster Troop” takes on the COVID vaccine and was made possible by The VaxUp Challenge, an initiative of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Innovation Studio and the County of Public Health Department of Los Angeles. Dr. Nneka Edward’s segment was filmed at the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital library in Toronto, Canada.
Booster Troop is creating a mental health program that will include self-assessments, interventionist content, health care coordination and culturally appropriate health parties. Welfie was recently selected as a winner of Google for Startups.
Welfie is a physician-founded, Black, women-led company whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of underserved children and their families through culturally competent health education and coordination of care in schools. Healthier children miss fewer days of school, perform better on tests, and lead happier, more productive lives.
