Ministry encourages cultural preservation through social media content

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology has encouraged residents to participate in efforts to preserve culture in creative ways expressed through short videos shared on social media .

“We want to strengthen our diversity and we continue to encourage these aspects to be part of the diverse content that showcases Indonesia,” director of the ministry of film, music and new media, Ahmad Mahendra, said Wednesday.

He pointed out that social media has become the main platform for spreading news and viral content.

Social media should be used to spread positive information, including campaigns to preserve cultural aspects and resilience as well as efforts to preserve national culture, the official noted.

Diversity narratives should be developed and disseminated to residents, especially members of the younger generation, to help them understand that Indonesia has cultural diversity that can be leveraged as engaging content on social media, explained Mahendra.

The director of the ministry said the COVID-19 pandemic had caused an increase in social media content and residents’ awareness of digital technology. The pandemic has forced residents to get creative in creating new digital content, such as vlogs, podcasts and short videos, which can attract viewers, he added.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to become a facilitator to collaborate with communities in creating positive content and improving the quality of cultural content on social media.

“The government will not stand still to facilitate what all parties, including content creators, needed,” Mahendra said.

He also pointed out that improving social media literacy among residents to ensure the creation of positive digital content is among the existing challenges that need to be addressed.

“The government is keen for all parties to upload positive content for our common benefit,” the director remarked.
