Media literacy campaign wins gold


The Arus Academy’s Media Education 4 All (ME4A) program won the Asian Digital Media Award for Best Project in Information Literacy.

Launched earlier this year, the program aims to equip educators with the ability to teach media literacy skills to students from across the country.

To achieve this, the academy worked with 15 specially selected Malaysian educators and 12 media professionals to develop Media Education Academy (MEA), a free online course that has registered over 1,700 educators since its launch on September 3. .

Arus Academy co-founder David Chak said the urgency of providing media education is increasing day by day with the dawn of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the impending elections.

“I hope that this award will open up more opportunities to collaborate with local educational institutions, public and private, to train more educators who know the media,” he said in a press release dated September 13.

Organized by the World Association of News Publishers (Wan-Ifra), the Asian Digital Media Awards (ADMA) are an annual award given to some of the most successful media companies on the Asian continent.

The ME4A program took gold, beating a Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) project which came in second.

ME4A partner investigative and impact media firm The Fourth also received an accolade at ADMA this year in the Best Native Advertising Campaign category.

Fourth co-founder Ian Yee, who is also associate editor of The Star, said Arus Academy’s victory is a testament to the quality of the ME4A program.

“Earning an ADMA is really big business for those of us in the media industry. This year alone, media organizations like Reuters, Bloomberg, SPH and South China Morning Post are among the winners.

“So for Arus Academy – a social enterprise for educators – to come in and win on the first try among all these great players is really quite remarkable. This is something Malaysians can be proud of, ”he said.
