Karakol American Corner Unveils Media Literacy and Cybersecurity Information Center


On February 18, 2022, the Issyk-Kul Oblast Library officially opened the Karakol American Corner Information Center for Media Literacy and Cyber ​​Security. In addition, participants of the English language program for young professionals received a certificate of completion. Both programs are supported by the U.S. Embassy in the Kyrgyz Republic.

In September 2020, the U.S. Embassy allocated over $29,000 to renovate and provide new technology for two library spaces to make them a modern and attractive place for residents of the Issyk- Kul, as well as handicap accessible to ensure everyone has access. to the library’s collection and USG-funded resources. This project supports the Kyrgyz government’s efforts to create a more inclusive society.

The Karakol American Corner, which has just marked the 15th anniversary of its opening, offers a variety of programs for all visitors, including cultural programs, English classes, VR programming, coding and other workshops of income-generating skills. The library’s Media-Center, supported by the U.S. Embassy, ​​also offers resources and programs focused on countering misinformation and supporting media literacy. The center aims to equip residents of the Issyk-Kul region with information, technical skills and critical thinking skills to evaluate and analyze information from different media sources. The center will offer media and computer literacy workshops and will continue to serve as a free platform to access information, develop personal and professional skills, learn English and expand scientific and technical knowledge, as well as to access credible information about the United States.
