Jackson State’s Social Media Platforms Ranked Top Among Mississippi Institutions


JACKSON, Mississippi (WJTV) – A national study, published by Rival IQ, has shown that Jackson State University (JSU) engagement in social media ranks highest among all other competing higher education institutions in Mississippi . JSU is also the second highest ranked historically black college and university (HBCU) in the country.

“Jackson State University is honored to be recognized as a leader in social media engagement among many of our peer institutions across the country,” said Alonda Thomas, associate vice president of marketing and communications. “This achievement is attributed to the dynamic content that our digital media team curates on a daily basis. The collaboration of our public relations, marketing, graphic design and digital media teams has been key to our success in developing an engaging experience for our diverse audience.

Rival IQ’s social media analytics software used data from 353 D1 colleges and universities from Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter between June 1, 2020 and May 31, 2021. Here are the following highlights from the report:

  • JSU is Mississippi’s top ranked institution for social media engagement.
  • JSU is the second highest ranked HBCU in the country for social media engagement.
  • JSU’s overall ranking dropped from 57th to 31st place.
  • JSU’s Facebook ranking improved from # 11 to # 4.
  • JSU’s Twitter rankings dropped from 33rd to 23rd place.
  • JSU’s Instagram account improved by dropping almost 100 places, from 234 to 138.
