IT minister calls for accountability for social media content
The government said on Thursday that responsibility for content uploaded to social media platforms and websites needed to be clearly defined, and that technological and internet changes over the past decades called for rethinking the internet governance structure.
“The way content is created, the way content is consumed, the way we access the Internet. The languages of access to the Internet, the machines, the modes of access to the Internet, everything has changed. So, with these fundamental changes, we certainly need to fundamentally rethink the entire governance structure of the Internet, ”said Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Communications and Computing, at the inaugural session of the first Forum. India on Internet Governance (IIGF 2021).
Vaishnaw asked forum participants to deliberate on key issues, including content liability, in an age when content is created and consumed through mobile devices. He said India, being one of the biggest internet users, must be a key stakeholder in how internet governance is defined around the world.
“We are working to make the Internet useful and safer for billions of Indians”
“If we read something, we start to believe that something is written in that WhatsApp message or in this Facebook page or on this particular website, so that must be true. Who will take responsibility for this content? He asked himself.

“So who takes responsibility for this content? Whether that content is on a social media platform or on a website, it should be clearly defined, so that there is accountability for the word written about someone, so that it is part of the society as an acceptable form, ”he said.
The minister also called for a discussion on “the social impact of the upheavals in economic models” with the advent of electronic commerce.
“The way e-commerce has disrupted the whole business world, the way so many other industries are disrupted, it has a social impact, a social cost … It has many benefits, but it also has some things that need to be mitigated. So this is one more thing that we as a society will have to think about, because it leaves out so many people who are less able to cope with the changes, ”he added.
