Social media has become perfect for people of different age groups to stay in touch. Whether it’s sharing a photo, reflecting on a comment or sending a message, it has a “dark side”, said Dr. Nune Grigoryan, assistant professor in communication.
“It’s good for collaboration opportunities,” Grigoryan said. “But it also contains a lot of misinformation and hurtful practices and behaviors.”
“Social media is a good thing, but I also see negative effects,” said Evelyn Enrique, senior marketing manager.
“I think it makes it easier and more reliable to communicate and connect with people,” Enrique said. “But I think the negative aspect is that a lot of kids are using it these days, so more and more younger kids are more active on their phones and less interactive with people.”
Despite the positive effects of social media on communication, it most certainly has negative effects on people’s health and insecurities. Among the most popular platforms: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok, each platform causes people to develop insecurities.
“I wouldn’t say they don’t intentionally target insecure groups,” Grigoryan said. “I know the platforms owned by META, formerly known as Facebook, have more of a history of hurting insecure people with more vulnerabilities.”
Grigoryan said that over the past few years, platforms, such as Instagram, have greatly influenced the mental health of young women and the way they perceive their body image, leading many of them to develop mental disorders. ‘food.
“Nothing was done to stop it and bring a positive effect,” she said. “So the more people consume this type of information, which harms their mental health and contributes to eating disorders, the more content they will get about it.”
Similar to Instagram, Snapchat is also known for posting photos and videos for people to view and comment on. Instagram and Snapchat grew to “make young kids and teens feel unsafe,” Enrique said.
“It gives them the fear of missing out all the time,” Enrique said. “So it can affect them wanting to hang out and feeling depressed and insecure because they might not be doing everything they see their friends posting.”
Unlike Instagram and Snapchat, Twitter is a faster and more interactive platform for users to comment on each other. Although most people do it the hard way.
“If you think about it, people on Twitter are mostly politically engaged,” Grigoryan said. “They have formed opinions that are not visual, so Twitter is influencing the kingdom more by spreading fake news, more likely than influencing mental health.”
However, like Facebook, consuming a lot of fake news on Twitter can still have a detrimental effect on mental health.
“You don’t take a break,” Grigoryan said. “Or you only hear certain types of information.”
According to recent research, TikTok, the newest platform that has caught the world’s attention in recent years, has created tougher insecurities and more negative body images for people, especially teenage girls, around the world.
“I’ve noticed a lot of young kids using TikTok,” Enrique said.
The constant urge to scroll through the video created related insecurities and harmful behaviors that Instagram and Snapchat also created for young children.
“It makes them want to post and make videos all the time,” Enrique said.
With the constancy of social media harming people, action to prevent these uncertainties and damaging, but deadly, mental health effects must be put in place.
“Users should be more careful about what kind of information they consume and how much they consume,” Grigoryan said. “But there is also a responsibility at the end of the platform itself. It is a two-way straight line.
“Maybe there can be a lesson in how kids can be more aware of using social media,” Enrique said. “Also, maybe taking breaks from time to time and setting alarms on your phones so you know when to quit the app or when to use it. Social media is great for most things like connecting and communicating with people, but in reality, it has its way of bringing people down and creating doubts and health issues. This is why people need to learn how to use it wisely, whether for health purposes or for gathering information.
“I think we should take social media for what it is, which is just a communication tool,” Grigoryan said. “And don’t forget that there is also a social aspect to life.”
