The Fulbright TEA program will bring international high school teachers to the United States for a six-week professional development program to attend academic seminars at a host university, observe and share their expertise with American teachers and students and develop action plans to promote the media. literacy and critical thinking skills in their home schools, classrooms and communities.

The Fulbright TEA Media Literacy Cohort is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), with funding provided by the U.S. government and administered by IREX in conjunction with the Fulbright Commission.

Program activities

  • General academic seminars focusing on new teaching methodologies, lesson planning and instructional technology training for teachers;
  • Specialized seminars focusing on classroom media literacy and critical thinking skills;
  • An internship of at least 40 hours with an American partner teacher in local high schools;
  • Various relevant professional development and cultural activities.


Applicants must:

  • Be current full-time high school level teachers of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), Romanian Language and Literature, Social Studies, Civics, History, World Studies, Media Studies, communications, journalism, law, math, science, or related fields in high schools or colleges primarily serving a local population;
  • Have obtained a Baccalaureate or the equivalent;
  • Have completed at least three years of full-time education at the start of the program;
  • Have Romanian citizenship, reside and work in Romania at the time of application and participation in the program;
  • Demonstrate fluency in oral and written English;
  • Have experience or a demonstrated interest in the field of media literacy and critical thinking;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continue teaching after the program ends;
  • Have submitted a complete application file.

Selection criteria

  • Demonstrated commitment to secondary education;
  • Demonstrated commitment or interest in promoting media literacy and critical thinking in the classroom;
  • Demonstrated leadership potential;
  • Professional and educational experience and achievements;
  • Potential for developing long-term ties between educational institutions and schools in the United States and home country;
  • Preparation (including maturity, flexibility, and ability to function independently) for an intensive US-based training program;
  • Willingness and ability to work and live collaboratively with international peers to foster a positive learning community for professional development;
  • Articulated ideas for applying the experience of the program to the improvement of secondary education and media education in the country of origin;
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and effectively;
  • Sufficient oral and written English skills to manage classes, participate in specialized seminars and make presentations in US schools;
  • Candidates who have had little or no opportunity to travel to the United States will be given priority.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are members of or work with students from underserved communities or traditionally underrepresented groups, including but not limited to women, racial, ethnic and religious minorities, people with disabilities, the LGBTI community and people from diverse backgrounds. geographical areas of the country.
  • Preference will also be given to applicants who have not previously received a Fulbright scholarship.
