Accurate count of social media platforms not possible, IT Department says

While admitting that it is not possible to keep an accurate count of social media platforms, the central government said that all significant social media intermediaries comply with relevant IT rules.

Cyberspace is virtual and borderless where any online intermediary can operate from anywhere in the world. All social media platforms are internet intermediaries and there are a large number of social media platforms accessible in India. It is not possible to keep an accurate count, State Minister for Electronics and Computers Rajeev Chandrashekhar said in a written response to the Rajya Sabha on Friday.

Compliance of social media intermediaries with the Information Technology Rules 2021 (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Code of Ethics) (“IT Rules 2021”) is being monitored by the government as users report it. For Significant Social Media Intermediaries (SSMIs), the government is monitoring their compliance with the IT Rules, 2021. All SSMIs are in compliance with Rule 4(1)(d) of the IT Rules, 2021, to date, informed The Minister .

Pursuant to Rule 4(1)(d) of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Code of Ethics) Rules 2021 (“IT Rules 2021”), major social media intermediaries (SSMI) are mandated to publish a compliance report on their websites or apps, every month. They are required to mention the details of the complaints received and the follow-up given to them, as well as the number of specific communication links or parts of information that the intermediary has removed or to which access has been deactivated, in as part of any proactive monitoring carried out using automated tools or any other relevant information.
