5G technology will improve streaming and quality of media content: Anurag Thakur

Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Minister Anurag Thakur said the launch of 5G services will help India’s media industry to grow as it improves user experience in addition to improving the quality of the content and the speed at which it is delivered.

Delivering his speech at the 17th Asian Media Summit via video conference, Thakur noted that the media has become highly technology-driven and is experiencing a rapid pace of innovation. “The growth of the Internet through affordable mobile devices has revived the media industry. He added that 5G technology will further enhance the user experience, with increased speed of delivery and improved quality of media content,” he added.

Thakur also applauded the role played by the Indian media during the difficult times of the Covid 19 pandemic. The Indian media, he said, ensured that Covid awareness messages, important government directives and free consultations with doctors reach everyone in the country. “The fact that Doordarshan and All India Radio have significantly fulfilled their public service mandate has been proven by their role in setting the trend through timely coverage, field reports and organizing programs on the public health,” he said.

Speaking about the threat of fake content, Thakur said unverified claims and fake content circulating in the media has created an atmosphere of extreme fear among the people. Crediting the fact-checking unit of the Press Information Bureau, he added that it was firmly fighting against this threat of fake news and disinformation by disseminating it in real time.

Thakur also said that the authenticity of the content will always remain at the core, regardless of technological advancements. “We can talk about the right to the free flow of information, we must also talk about the need to disseminate correct information,” he added.

The Minister concluded by expressing his firm belief in the positive role that the media plays in the world and said that the sector has an immense capacity to shape the right perceptions and perspectives of the public as an effective tool for empowerment.
