I ‘upgraded’ to Vista a few weeks ago and unhappily discovered that utorrent ran like an absolute dog. I would try to download the same torrent on two identically configured utorrent clients on the same connnection – one running on my Vista desktop and one running on my XP laptop. What I would see on Vista was:
- It struggled to find seeds, yet on XP, it found plenty.
- Download speed hovered around 0.2 kB/s whereas on XP it would happily do 50-350 kB/s.
Continue reading for the fix …
I looked through a lot of forums for solutions to my slow downloads, googled a lot, played with connection and firewall settings – all to no avail. It was driving me nuts!
What finally worked and solved my problem is this: In utorrent, go to Options -> Preferences -> Advanced. The second option under Advanced is ‘net.bind_ip’. Set this to the IP address of your computer. Restart utorrent.
That fixed it – I now find plenty of seeds again and have got download speeds of 50-300 kB/s in utorrent. According to the utorrent website, ‘net.bind_ip specifies which adapter to use for incoming connections.’ I don’t make any claims as to understanding why this works – but it does. If you are having problems with slow torrent downloads on Vista, I hope this post helps you.

not working for me, however im on a network… Ive been messing around with some other settings and I have some what of a speed increase, hope this helps others (I will also keep you updated if i can tweak more speed outa it cus im still not happy.
Windows Network Settings:
de-activated IP-v6 (im not using wireless so I dont need it. + v4 is easyer to note down.
de-activated Qos Packet Scheduler (this gave a boost of speed)
uTorrent Settings:
Options -> Preferences -> Advanced
I left the net.bind_ip alone and edited the net.outgoing_ip and changed this to my default gateway address. also turned off UPnP port mapping. enabled the DHT stuff and turned on the protocol Encryption

Thanx man, this reallt helped. Now I can go back to the ol’ uTorrent. Bless your heart
22/03/2007 at 7:31 am Permalink
Both your and Chiller’s help in combination only slightly fixed the problem. I was getting like 7kb/s and below, and having trouble finding seeds (as you said).
Doing what was said only barely fixed the problems as I’ve gotten up to 20kb/s (and NO higher mind you).
It’s kinda bugging the shit outta me, but I’m praying that 1.7 will release too.
Also, this in breaking news! Just got up to 31kb/s. I know it should be faster though, I have 7 seeds and 68 peers on this dl.

any fixes for this?

I don’t know what all the cause for concern is here, really. I’m on a private wireless network with WPA. I set a static IP, set net.outgoing_ip to my default gateway, and I’m getting better results than I ever got on XP. I’m using 1.6 standalone.
09/06/2007 at 7:50 pm Permalink
it worked for me …
1. net.bind_ip’. Set this to the IP address
2. turned off UPnP
result from 20Kb –> 92kb

Man, my problem with Vista is that my whole computer slows down like a mother when I run utorrent. Forget browsing the web… ie, firefox opera or whatever. I can’t even fire up programs like itunes whilst utorrent is running… even after I close it. The only solution is to restart my computer when I wanna go use the web.
As concerns downloading itself I find that it takes ages to get started. Right now there are 9085 seeds and 18040 peers and I’m 0 on both. Once I get started it’s okay, I can normally get up to about 125 but it’s so slow getting started.
17/10/2007 at 8:07 pm Permalink
vista and torrents just dont work together. vista is not done yet and therefor whatever you do will only increase the speed a tiny bit. i have been messing around with torrents and vista for months and the highest speed ive gotten to is 100 kb/s, which is usually only on small files. games and other large programs only reach to about 40 kb/s if im lucky..
a solution to your problems with vista torrents, is to first of all get ultimate, if you have home premium or business thats one reason for it being slow. another solution is download hotfixes for vista, which will later be in sp 1. here is the site –> http://www.vistasp1.net/forums/index.php?s=7225caf7f58be804a45b7da2c9ee51ed&showforum=2

Philip, that last site you gave, I followed the instructions and nothing. I really hate Vista cause with my old laptop, XP ran great on it. Anyway, I can’t even install XP on this laptop as it’s got a Sata harddrive and I don’t think it’ll even find the partition (unless I do something, which I have to research). Then, there are no XP drivers for my Gateway MT6707. They’re all Vista.

I have utorrent 1.7.5 and am still getting slow speeds with vista. Tried just about everything and cant get speeds to increase.
My problem is the incoming connections seems limited if any. The network status is green but when i test to see if the port is forwarded properly it says its not for some reason. (even though it is)
Dont really know what to do now, havent tried messing with registry stuff and dont really plan too since this should be fixed.
14/12/2007 at 8:09 pm Permalink
were all having the same problem so its obviously vista it self. lets just wait for sp1 and see if the problem fades away
17/12/2007 at 8:09 pm Permalink
Your all going to be very happy now
. i found a fix for Utorrent that allowed my seeders and download speed to increase a lot. this is what you do.
Options>Preferences>Advanced> net.max_halfopen. (change the number to a higher number like 200 or 500 and your downloads should increase surprisingly a lot)
Hope it works as good for all of u like it did for me!

The best way is : Get Virtual PC (I’m using VPC 2007) in Vista, on VPC install Xp, select right network connection and install utorrent. It works phenomenal and Internet connection in Vista works phenomenal without delays, and you dont have to set any advance options or something else. When utorrent works on full download mode, I’m browsing in Vista like I have another Int. provider. For me, it works (dl: 1343 kb/s, ul: 124 kb/s)!!!!! Really, try it.

However, I followed the awesome instructions from portforward.com and now, it’s really picking up.. almost 50 KBps. I just tweaked with your tips too..
Lets see, if it works on next restart helping me to get over 50 KBps..

I use utorrent 1.7.7 and bitcomet 1.0.1, Vista SP1, 32MBit Internet connection, Static IP, what else… (Router is NETGEAR WRG614 but that is no the problem since the XP PC works…)

Just follow the instructions on portforward.com with static IP / port forwarding and make sure the ikon below the screen is green.
And then change net.bind_ip to that adress and net.max_halfopen to a larger number.
Making 400-800 kb/s on Vista Home Premium … of course depending on seeder-quality and quantity and torrent-tracker … textbooktorrents download amazingly fast.

Well get this,
my utorrent has the same problem with slowness, just suddenly started for no reason, shortly after i upgraded to utorrent 1.8 – so i tried disabling firewalls yadayada, and nothing. i tried a different program like bitcomet (dont like it) and that works fine, but i really want utorrent.
i tried safe mode and tada, it runs torrents full speed.
so something somewhere in my vista start up is fucking with my utorrent…

My ISP have allocated a dynamic IP. Do I have to change the IP address each time I start Bittorrent? Thanks.

Mine actually went slower. Serious.
It was kinda hovering at 30 kB/s before, then it went down to 10 kB/s after I did it.
I waited a bit too. When I changed it back, it went back up. Any ideas?

Been running UTorrent for 2 year now, never had a prob with speed.I`ve got 20mb
broadband and quite often get full D/L speed, depending on what I`m D/L.Never had to mess to much with settings on UTorrent, apart from altering U/L speed to 25kb/s when D/L.Full D/L speed is 2.1Mb/s and U/L 85kb/s,thats Virgin Media for you, fast D/L and very, very slow U/L

Thank You so much. I am a newbie to the world of utorrent, and thought that my slow download speeds were inevitable. Now i can get up to 100kb/s. Thank YOu very much

Oi folks,
I got Vista (32b) I also have uttorrent and bittorent, i did speed test > 950 down / 450 up.
I got good internet but still downloading 10-50 kb/s.
I tried the commands mentioned here,
bt.transp_disposition to 255.
net.bind_ip to my-ip
net.outgoing_ip to default gateway up
net.max_halfopen to 250
Still not working and still got the red sign. It says: Change listen port, but i already tried it, but i cant get connected to my router. So i tried to connect to internet w/o router, and I couldnt even get on the internet, very strange (it said: unidentified network). I putted the router back and got internet again.
So anyone got other commands for me?
pz.

hey i have a prob just wit my upload. i cant connect to any peers. it will show hundreds of peers or thousands and i cant even connect to even 2 at most. my download speed is like 1.8mb which is so fast. but for some reason my upload rate is only like 0.1 kb or 1.1 at the most. it wont connect to peers is the problem. my download is fine becuase i connect to so many seeds but i just have a porblem connecting to peers. can someone tell me why? i have vista and u torrent.
21/01/2010 at 10:59 am Permalink
anybody have any idea to why my downloads go just fine and they connect to alot of seeds like they should so i get like a 2.0mb or 1.1mb at the lowest when i dl something. but when i seed that item and try to get some uploads going it messes up. how come my downloading is so fast but my upload is the total opposite? it does not make any sense at all. u would think my upload would work at least 100kb or something on each torrent but it wont connect to any peers for some reason. it only connects to seeds not peers. i have a serious peer connecting problem and i have a fast internet connection cable.
